It's that time of year, when the Easter bunny visits children and provides excitement during the holiday. It's also the time of year when many well-meaning parents get rabbits for their children, thinking they are buying a low-maintenance starter pet. Unfortunately, young children and rabbits aren't always a good match. When the novelty wears off many of these Easter rabbits end up at local animal shelters. Unlucky rabbits may be dumped outside where they may encounter predators, cars, illness, and injury. And others are destined to lives of neglect and boredom in cramped cages.
If your family wants a rabbit this Easter consider giving a chocolate bunny or a stuffed toy instead. If the family is really serious about getting a rabbit, give a book on rabbit care. Long after the holiday has passed and your child is still begging for a pet, go to your local shelter or rescue group and find out how to adopt a rabbit. Peoria County Animal Protection Services takes in unwanted rabbits throughout the year. The adoption fee for rabbits is $50, which includes the cost to spay or neuter.
