Peoria, IL— Single-parent families and their children are invited to a free event hosted by From the Field Cooking School in Morton, Ill. The event is called Let’s Make Dinner and will take place on Saturday, April 20 at 2 p.m. Let’s Make Dinner is to help spread awareness in the Peoria area of the importance and necessity of eating a healthy dinner together as a family.

This free cooking demonstration and class will showcase local chef, Bill Turney, who in conjunction with Peoria’s HyVee and FamilyCore is working to encourage single-parent families in the Peoria area to make eating a meal together as a family a priority.  Studies show that there are benefits connected to eating together that include increased mental stability, improved academic work, and a healthier diet.

Single-parent family’s make up 42.2% of Peoria, this issue is very important in our area. (http://www.city-data.com/top2/h7.html)

This free event will allow children and single-parents to cook a healthy, time-saving recipe, with instruction from Turney. Following the cooking class and demonstration families will be encouraged to stay and speak with HyVee’s dietician and ask any questions they might have.

FamilyCore counselors will also be on hand to speak with families about communication in the household and services they provide.  “[Meal time] is an opportunity to share individual daily life experiences with other family members,” states Doug Allan, CEO of FamilyCore. “As well as receive encouragement, judgment and advice in return.  It helps define family members’ individual and collective identity.”

Free food and refreshments will be provided to all who attend.

At the end of the day, this event is part of a hopeful growing movement.  Ultimately, we would like to demonstrate to single-parent families that having a meal with your family can be easy, convenient and even fun! We are all hoping for a better tomorrow and that starts with changing today.
