Check out this great event after the downtown St. Patrick's Day parade!
The Global Warming Solutions Group is hosting an event called Kids Go Green. The event will provide school aged kids an engaging, hands-on opportunity to learn more about “green” concepts such as recycling, water conservation, saving energy and living more sustainably. There will be a variety of activities during the event provided by local businesses and groups. Kids Go Green is from noon to 4 pm on March 17, 2012, and located at the newly renovated Peoria Public Library Downtown Branch at 107 N.E. Monroe. The event is free and open to the public.
Activities include:
•Door prizes!
•Recycle your trash! (see website for details)
•Scavenger hunt!
•Ride the Energy Bike!
• Worms! and composting
• Plant your own seeds (in soil and without soil)
• Toxins in our daily life
• Recycling
• See what is made from recycled materials
• Energy use and creation
• Green your lunch
• Community supported agriculture
• NASA info on air, climate and atmosphere
• Carbon Footprints
• Appearance by the Ameren Energy Hog
• And more!
Several items are being collected for recycling or upcyling during the event that are not recyclable curbside, if at all locally. Attendees are encouraged to bring the following items (note: more details provided on the event website at http://kidsgogreenpeoria.com/recycle-your-trash):
· Light bulbs (all types) up to 4 feet in size will be recycled by GroUp Gardening and CFLs will be recycled by Peoria County Recycling
· Alkaline household batteries
· Plastic grocery shopping bags
· Energy bar wrappers
· Cereal bag liners
